The girlfriend of a Japanese man was finally able to claim his body, which was found among several others in an illegal funeral home in Manila.

The woman, who goes by the name “Lyn,” said the funeral home refused to release the remains unless she paid nearly P500,000.

Akihito Nishizuka was found dead in his condo in Malate, Manila on August 29, 2024.

Since he had no family in the Philippines, the Japanese Embassy authorized Lyn to take his body.

But the Body and Light Funeral Services still would not release it.

Lyn said the funeral home asked for P326,000, plus another P90,000 for cremation.

She only had P100,000 at the time, so they did not hand over the body.

Believing what the embassy told her, she thought Akihito had already been buried.

Nearly a year later, Lyn was shocked to see Akihito’s body on a GMA News report about the illegal funeral home raid by the Manila Health Department.

She quickly went to the Manila North Cemetery to try her luck and see if she could finally get his remains.

The Manila LGU stepped in to help her with the paperwork and cremation process.

The city also continues to investigate the funeral home, which is accused of overcharging and operating without a license.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno described the funeral home’s actions as a form of “hold-up,” saying their fees were unreasonable and the delay added more pain to grieving families.
