About 200 students and two teachers were brought to the hospital after experiencing dizziness and fainting during the grand parade that opened the intramural meet at a school in Isabela City, Basilan on Thursday. The cause of their condition—extreme heat.

According to Efren Mamac’s report on GMA Regional TV One Mindanao on Friday, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) said the heat index in Isabela that day reached between 33 to 41 degrees Celsius.

“They fainted, lost consciousness due to heat exhaustion. Hinimatay dahil sa init ng panahon. Umabot po siya ng between 33 to 41°C (heat index),” said CDRRMO Head, Uso Dan Salasim.

Based on Basilan National High School’s record, 187 non-athlete students and two teachers were sent to the hospital.

Out of that number, 152 have already been discharged, while 35 remain under observation but are conscious and expected to be released soon.

The two teachers were also among those discharged.

According to the school principal, many of the students affected by the extreme heat reportedly skipped lunch due to their excitement over the event.

“Karamihan po sa sagot nila, hindi sila nakapag lunch dahil sa excitement nila after 6 years bago nabigyan ng oportunidad na magkaroon ng ganito na mga activity. Hindi lang sa classrooms ang learning na makuhanan natin,” explained Basilan National High School Principal, Dr. Arnel Balang Hajan.

The school, with the help of the local government, will shoulder the medical expenses of the students and teachers.

Dr. Hajan also assured that the activity followed the Department of Education’s (DepEd) guidelines for outdoor events.

“We adhere to DepEd guidelines that no outdoor activity from 10 o’clock in the morning to 2 o’clock in the afternoon. That‘s why we commenced our opening and grand parade at 2 o‘clock kahapon,” said Hajan.

Despite what happened, the event continued.
