In the Philippines, homicide is treated as a serious criminal offense under the Revised Penal Code.
It refers to the unlawful killing of a person without qualifying circumstances like evident premeditation or cruelty, which would otherwise classify it as murder.
Homicide carries a lighter penalty compared to murder, but it still involves imprisonment. The usual punishment for homicide is reclusion temporal, which means imprisonment ranging from 12 to 20 years.
The exact length of imprisonment depends on the circumstances of the crime, including any mitigating or aggravating factors presented during the trial.
If proven guilty, the offender must serve time in prison and may also be required to pay damages to the victim’s family.
