The incident took place in August 2020, when 95-year-old man was discovered dead in his bed, having suffered fatal burns and smoke inhalation.
His granddaughter, Emilie G., 33, later admitted to starting the fire.
She told the court it was “an act of love,” intended to end her grandfather’s suffering.

The court initially found Emilie guilty in October 2024, but sentenced her to a five-year suspended term.
Prosecutors challenged the ruling, calling the act “cruel and selfish” and seeking a harsher penalty.
Now, as hearings resume in Bourg-en-Bresse, Emilie could face life imprisonment.
During the first trial, experts noted that Emilie struggled with depression and was overwhelmed by the responsibility of caregiving, parenting, and a troubled relationship.
On the day of the incident, she learned her partner had been unfaithful. That evening, she doused her grandfather’s mattress in gasoline and ignited it by tossing a burning piece of paper onto the bed before fleeing.
Prosecutor Romain Ducrocq argued she acted to “exorcise her frustration and multiple failures.”
Still, Emilie maintains her actions were rooted in compassion.
“An act of love,” she said, insisting her grandfather was someone she deeply cared for and saw as a father figure.
