Civilian shot dead by police officer in Cebu, suspect surrenders

A tragic incident unfolded on June 6 in Brgy. Tuburan after a police staff sergeant fatally shot a civilian, sparking outrage in the community.

According to a report by Brigada News PH, the altercation began when the officer approached a group that included the victim.

While engaging in conversation with the group, the police officer reportedly slapped one of them, which escalated into a heated confrontation.

Witnesses claim the officer then drew his firearm and fired a shot, prompting people in the vicinity to flee in panic.

Shortly after, the officer allegedly followed the victim to a nearby house and shot him in the head, causing his immediate death.

The suspect later surrendered to authorities, and his .45 caliber handgun was recovered as part of the investigation.

Emotions ran high following the incident, and the victim’s sibling, in a fit of anger, threw a stone at the police vehicle, resulting in damage. This act of retaliation led to the sibling’s arrest.

Authorities have yet to release the full details surrounding the motive and whether the officer was under the influence or acting under any particular circumstances.

The shooting has ignited calls for a thorough investigation and demands for accountability, especially given the involvement of a law enforcement officer.

As the case unfolds, both the victim's family and the public await justice in what many see as a disturbing case of abuse of power by someone expected to protect lives, not take them.

The victim’s live-in partner, a barangay tanod, sustained a gunshot wound to the knee, and another tanod was grazed in the chest after pursuing the fleeing suspects who fired additional shots. Authorities are actively investigating the identity of the perpetrators and potential motives for the attack, including whether the backrider was female and if a “love triangle” was involved.

Still in other news, a 23-year-old man suffered from physical injuries after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of young men. According to the report of GMA Regional TV, the victim, Mat Ernest Bongo brought his female co-worker home and it was thereafter that the alleged assault took place. He sustained injuries in different parts of his body. Based on the report, the victim was also allegedly robbed by the same group.
