According to Jhon Cagas, a resident who made the initial discovery around Tuesday noon, the deceased infant was found wrapped in plastic, without clothing, near Block 34, Kalayaan Street corner Eusebio Avenue.
“Dali-dali po akong kumuha ng cellphone para maitawag sa 911 ang pangyayari,” Cagas recounted, describing his immediate action upon seeing the infant. “Pagkita namin sa bata wala po siyang saplot, nakabalot po sa plastic. Agad po naming tinabunan ng kulay asul na tela para po may pang-ano po siya.” (I quickly got my cellphone to call 911 about the incident. When we saw the child, he had no clothes on, wrapped in plastic. We immediately covered him with a blue cloth to give him something.)
The area where the infant was found is a narrow alleyway. Residents initially disregarded a foul odor emanating from the garbage, assuming it was from discarded fish gills.
It was only when a vehicle drove through the alley, running over the trash, that the plastic-wrapped infant became visible after the garbage was compressed.
The prolonged presence of the infant's body before being fully noticed caused distress among residents, some of whom resorted to wearing face masks due to the intensifying stench.
Barangay Pinagbuhatan officials stated they received the report late Tuesday afternoon and immediately responded to the scene with local police and medical rescuers.
Upon assessment, the infant was declared deceased. It was also determined that the baby was approximately seven months gestational age.
The retrieval of the infant’s body from the scene was further complicated by logistical challenges, extending for nearly half a day.
It was not until around 12 midnight on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, that funeral service personnel arrived.
However, Barangay Kagawad Jess Santos explained that the funeral parlor required specific permits, usually provided by relatives, before they could take the body.
“Wala rin pong ma-provide na mga permit o ‘yung sanitary na manggagaling ng iba’t ibang opisina. Nakiusap na lang po kami sa punenarya para makuha po. Base po kasi sa punenarya kailangan po nila ‘yun bago nila kunin ‘yung bangkay. Usually po sa kaanak po siya, sa scenario po kasi natin, wala pong ma-identify kung sino ang kamag-anak nito,” Santos clarified. (No permits or sanitary documents from various offices could be provided. We just pleaded with the funeral parlor to get the body. Based on their policy, they need those before taking the cadaver. Usually, it's from relatives, but in our scenario, no relatives could be identified.)
With no identified relatives, the barangay officials had to negotiate with the funeral service to ensure the infant’s proper handling and burial.
The local authorities, in coordination with the Pasig City Action Center, are actively investigating the incident to determine the identity of the individual or individuals responsible for abandoning the infant.
Kagawad Jess Santos noted the area is a boundary between Pasig and Taytay, adding a layer of complexity to the search.
Barangay Kagawad Arcie Lucas made a public appeal, urging anyone with information about the infant’s relatives or parents to come forward and assist the barangay.
“Sa nakakakilala po, nakakaalam, kung sino ‘yung mga kaanak nito, magulang, ipagbigay po sa amin sa barangay para mapuntahan sila at mailibing nang maayos ang bata,” Lucas appealed, hoping to provide the infant with a dignified burial.
In the absence of identified responsible parties, the local barangay has committed to arranging a decent burial for the deceased infant.
The investigation continues to uncover the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking discovery.
