Initial reports indicate their last contact with family or employers was around the first week of May, specifically on May 10 or 11.
The decomposed bodies were unearthed after local residents reported a foul odor emanating from a secluded area within the rubber plantation.
Upon investigation by the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), the remains were found with their hands tied, suggesting a violent end.
The identities of the victims were positively confirmed by their families based on the clothing they were last seen wearing, providing a crucial lead for investigators.
According to Lt. Col. Jopy Ventura, spokesperson for PRO-BAR, the men were in Maguindanao del Sur to deliver what were described as “allegedly kambing” (goats) to a specific individual.
Police officials in Maguindanao del Sur reported that the three were last seen on May 11 inside a white van loaded with hybrid goats near Nabundas Elementary School in Barangay Nabundas, where they were supposed to meet the buyer. After this rendezvous, contact with them was lost.
The prolonged search for the missing men culminated on Friday, May 30, when villagers in Sitio Goma, Barangay Nabundas, aided police personnel from the Shariff Saydona Mustapha Municipal Police Station and intelligence agents in locating the exact burial site.
The cadavers were exhumed in the presence of barangay officials, then transported to a mortuary for proper documentation and embalming.
On Monday, June 2, their remains were airlifted to Manila aboard a Philippine Air Force (PAF) C-130 aircraft from Cotabato Airport, allowing their families to bring them home.
Local executives in Shariff Saydona Mustapha and neighboring towns have provided additional context, suggesting that the Olartes and Alumno were abducted by a group, robbed of their belongings, and then systematically killed with their hands tied behind them before being buried in a shallow grave.
Police probers, speaking anonymously due to lack of authority, noted that the victims were last seen conversing with a local individual who, along with four others, allegedly “robbed them and brought them to an area in Barangay Nabundas” where they were subsequently shot.
Authorities are intensifying their investigation, focusing on identifying the person the victims were in contact with for the goat delivery and subsequently, pinpointing the perpetrators responsible for this atrocity.
Brig. Gen. Romeo Juan Macapaz, director of PRO-BAR, has enlisted the support of Moro community leaders and local executives to assist in identifying the group behind the killings.
The Army's 6th Infantry Division is also reportedly assisting the police in resolving the case. This tragic incident has sent ripples of concern through local communities, highlighting the importance of thorough investigations to ensure justice is served.
