According to her account, she was at the market choosing tilapia when the unexpected happened, Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho repored.

“I was holding the tilapia when it suddenly thrashed in my hand,” she recalled. “It fell onto my leg, but I didn’t pay attention because I didn’t feel anything at the time.”

She said it felt like a small sting, which she brushed off. “I let a little blood out, thinking it was just a minor wound.” However, the next day, pain started to set in.

“At first, I thought it was a simple ache. But then my leg started to swell — slowly, but steadily — all the way up to my thigh,” she explained. “Eventually, the doctor told me the leg had to be amputated.”

Doctors suspect that the fish’s scale pierced her skin and introduced bacteria, possibly causing a severe infection like necrotizing fasciitis or cellulitis, which can spread quickly without immediate treatment.

This unusual case highlights the importance of paying close attention to even minor injuries, especially for older individuals or those with underlying health conditions such as diabetes.

“I never expected something like this would happen — all because of tilapia,” she said tearfully.

Health experts urge the public to clean and disinfect any wounds immediately and seek medical attention if pain, swelling, or redness worsens.
