The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched an investigation into a road altercation involving a police officer who allegedly brandished his firearm during a heated argument with a motorcycle rider in Sta. Ana, Manila.

According to a statement released Friday, May 16, PNP Chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil ordered the Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) to probe the incident, which took place along F. Manalo Street in Barangay 897 on May 12.

Initial reports indicate that the police officer, who was assigned to a polling center as part of election security operations, engaged in a verbal altercation with the rider.

The argument escalated to the point where the officer reportedly drew his firearm and struck the rider.

Fortunately, a responding officer from the police assistance desk at the polling center intervened and brought both parties to the barangay hall to settle the matter.

As part of immediate disciplinary measures, the officer has been relieved of his duties and reassigned to the District Personnel Holding and Accounting Section of the Manila Police District.

He has also been disarmed while the investigation is ongoing.

Formal charges of grave misconduct and conduct unbecoming of a police officer have been filed against him.

PNP Chief Marbil emphasized the importance of discipline and patience among motorists, especially during traffic encounters.

“Let us be responsible and respectful on the road,” he said, urging both officers and civilians to remain calm in stressful situations.

Witnesses say the violence erupted after Benedicto reportedly fired upon volunteers of “Team Ugyon” who were monitoring alleged vote-buying activities outside a property associated with “Team Asenso.”

Still in other news, a 65-year-old man, Nestor Rensales, died after voting in Oas, Albay during the midterm elections. Rensales, a stroke survivor, felt dizzy and collapsed shortly after casting his vote at Oas South Central Elementary School, ABS-CBN reported. His wife shared that he insisted on voting despite the heat and early crowd, believing his vote still mattered. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
