The driver of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) that plowed into several people at the departure entrance of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 1 has been released on bail, authorities confirmed Friday.

Leo Gonzales, the man behind the wheel during the tragic incident, was released after posting bail amounting to ₱100,000, as set by the Pasay Regional Trial Court.

“He has already been released on bail,” said Brig. Gen. Christopher Abecia, Director of the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (AVSEG), in a statement to the media.

The deadly crash occurred on May 4, when a parked SUV suddenly accelerated and smashed through protective bollards at the departure area of Naia Terminal 1.

The vehicle struck several individuals waiting at the terminal.

Tragically, the crash claimed the lives of two people, one of whom was a 4-year-old child.

In addition, four others sustained injuries of varying severity.

The incident prompted widespread concern over safety protocols at one of the country’s busiest airports, as well as calls for accountability from the driver and airport management.

The victims’ families are expected to pursue legal action as investigations continue into what led to the unexpected and deadly acceleration of the SUV.

As of now, no further details have been released regarding Gonzales’ defense or whether he will face additional charges beyond reckless imprudence resulting in h&micide and physical injuries.

Still in other news, a 65-year-old man, Nestor Rensales, died after voting in Oas, Albay during the midterm elections. Rensales, a stroke survivor, felt dizzy and collapsed shortly after casting his vote at Oas South Central Elementary School, ABS-CBN reported. His wife shared that he insisted on voting despite the heat and early crowd, believing his vote still mattered. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
