Broadcast journalist Emil Sumangil confirmed the untimely passing of his mountaineer cousin, Engr. Philipp Santiago II.

Santiago died at the age of 45 during his quest to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.
In a heartbreaking Facebook post on Thursday, May 15, Sumangil noted, “Our family is asking for prayers for the eternal repose of the soul of our beloved Engr. Philipp PJ Santiago II.”
“We also continue to pray for the safety and well-being of Karl Miguel Santiago during this difficult time,” the Kapuso newscaster continued.

Furthermore, Sumangil asked for privacy as they mourn the climber’s sudden demise.
“The family respectfully requests privacy as we grieve and process these events. Your understanding, support, and prayers are deeply appreciated.”
“Maraming Salamat po,” he added.
According to a report by The Himalayan Times, Snowy Horizon Treks Managing Director Bodhraj Bhandari said Santiago died at Camp IV while preparing for the summit push on the evening of May 14. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined.
Bhandari also told the outlet that other members of the team are making their way to the summit. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to bring Santiago's remains to the base camp, Bhandari informed.
The late Pinoy climber was part of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar-Snowy Everest Expedition 2025.
