According to a report by GMA Regional TV on "Balitanghali" Thursday, the victim’s wife shared that they had a pit dug at the back of their house to serve as a water storage facility for their piggery.

During the excavation, one of the workers reportedly passed out inside the pit, prompting calls for help.

The woman’s husband immediately went down the pit to assist. However, he was left alone inside and was unable to come back up.

Family members attempted to rescue him, but the unbearable stench from the pit forced them to back away.

When emergency responders arrived, they were able to retrieve the man's body—but he was already lifeless.

Other individuals who had also been affected by the fumes were reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities are still investigating the source and nature of the strong odor coming from the pit.

The victim’s wife later revealed that they had been burying dead pigs in their backyard, raising the possibility that the smell could be from decomposing animal remains.

Following the incident, the pit was immediately covered with soil to prevent further risk.

This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the importance of safety precautions and proper waste disposal, especially in homes with livestock and backyard farming activities.
