She was rushed to a hospital where doctors diagnosed her with pulmonary edema caused by water entering her lungs.
The performer had to be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for treatment.
Initial reports suggested that Ms. Feng may have passed out due to hypoglycemia.
However, the management of Taiyuan Ocean World later issued a clarifying statement: "The mermaid, Ms. Feng, drowned when her goggles and flippers fell off during the performance. She did not drown due to hypoglycemia, but because her flippers fell off and she could not float up."
The incident has sparked discussions online about the safety of underwater performers and the need for immediate emergency protocols during aquatic shows.
As of the latest update, no additional information on Ms. Feng’s condition has been released.
