In a video report by ABS-CBN News, 11 persons were confirmed to have died due to injuries sustained and many others were injured after an SUV plowed through a street party during the LapuLapu Festival.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., through the official statement, expressed being “completely shattered” upon hearing the news of the horrific event that marred what was intended to be a joyous celebration of Filipino heritage.

The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver has been actively engaged with Canadian authorities in the aftermath of the incident.

Initial reports from Vancouver indicate that the incident occurred on Saturday evening, April 26, 2025, near the intersection of East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street.

A 30-year-old male suspect was apprehended at the scene, and the Vancouver Police Department has stated that they do not believe the incident to be an act of terrorism, though the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Witnesses described a black SUV speeding into a pedestrian-only area where the festival was taking place, striking numerous attendees.

The LapuLapu Festival is an annual event celebrating Filipino culture and heritage, commemorating the indigenous chieftain Lapu-Lapu.

The sudden and violent disruption of this cultural gathering has sent shockwaves through both the Filipino and wider Canadian communities.

He later died and was declared dead on arrival. The other victim was taken to the Bicol Medical Center, while police authorities continue with the investigation.
