Kanlaon Volcano erupted early Tuesday, releasing a thick column of ash that reached as high as 4,000 meters and disrupted daily routines in nearby communities, including the suspension of classes, ABS-CBN reported.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the eruption began at 5:51 a.m.
“An explosive eruption is currently occurring at the summit vent of Kanlaon Volcano that began at 5:51 am today,” the agency announced.
The ash plume, described by PHIVOLCS as “a voluminous bent plume approximately 4,000 meters tall,” was observed drifting southwest.

Footage circulating online captured the dramatic moment, with gray smoke visibly rising and spreading across the sky.
In Negros Occidental, La Castellana Mayor Rhummyla Mangilimutan confirmed that ash fall has been reported in the villages of Sag-Ang and Mansalanao.
She also noted the direction of the ash and steam, stating it was moving southwest toward La Carlota City.
“Tuloy-tuloy ang usok sa bunganga, ‘yung maitim na usok, at sa gilid meron din. Super dilim na ‘yung part papuntang La Carlota,” Mangilimutan said in a separate interview, describing the thick black smoke billowing from the crater and the darkness it brought over parts of the area.
As a safety measure, all classes in the municipality have been canceled. Emergency personnel have been placed on standby in response to the ongoing volcanic activity.
Currently, around 1,300 individuals have been relocated to evacuation centers to ensure their safety.

Meanwhile in news abroad, Chinese state media aired footage of three Filipinos allegedly confessing to spying for the Philippine intelligence agency. ABS-CBN reported that Manila asserts the individuals are civilians and suspects the arrests are retaliation for its crackdown on Chinese spies. NSC spokesperson Jonathan Malaya questioned the validity of the confessions, saying the agencies mentioned don’t exist. Palawan officials said the accused were former government scholars under a China-Philippines educational exchange.
