The Bureau of Fire Protection in Tanauan City reported that the fire started at approximately 1:19 p.m. in the stockyard of a food manufacturing firm.
Authorities believe that the blaze may have been caused by piles of spent bleaching earth (SBE), a chemical by-product from edible oil refining.
F/Sr. Supt. Dennis Molo, Batangas provincial fire marshal, explained that SBE is highly combustible and poses a serious hazard if mishandled.

“Flammable siya, [kapag] na-expose siya sa heat kusang nag-inite,” he said, noting that exposure to heat can easily ignite the substance.
The fire quickly spread from the stockyard to the adjacent open lot of a logistics company, where over a thousand brand-new cars were waiting to be delivered to various dealerships. Of these, 200 vehicles were reportedly destroyed.
“Mayroon silang dumpyard noong mga scrap na mga drums na may natitirang mga chemicals, 'yun ang nagliyab siguro sa init ng panahon,” said Mandanas, citing high temperatures as a possible contributing factor.
He added that although the flames reached the warehouse, the structure’s built-in fire suppression system managed to prevent further damage.
“From there naabot 'yung warehouse pero maganda 'yung warehouse dahil mayroong fire system na 'yung tubig kaagad pinatay ['yung apoy] kaya halos walang damage sa loob ng warehouse.”
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although the fire reached the third alarm before it was put under control.
