Tragedy struck in the highlands of Mt. Province on Friday night when a tourist van plunged off a cliff, leaving five people dead and nine others injured.

According to authorities from the Mt. Province Police Office, the accident happened around 10 p.m. in the area of Ampawilen, located in Barangay Poblacion, Sadanga.
The vehicle, a white Nissan van, was reportedly navigating a mountain road when it lost control and fell roughly 50 meters down a ravine, ultimately landing in a river below.
Among the deceased were three men and two women, though their identities have not yet been released to the public.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the nine surviving passengers to Bontoc General Hospital for treatment.
Their current conditions have not been disclosed.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation, but authorities suspect that poor road conditions or mechanical failure may have played a role.
This incident adds to a growing list of vehicular tragedies in the Philippines involving public and private transport.
Just last month, seven people were killed in Antique province when a truck carrying farm workers lost its brakes and fell into a ravine.

Meanwhile in other news, a barangay chairman in Sta. Maria, Pangasinan died after he was shot but a still unknown gunman. According to the report of Balitanghali of GMA Integrated News, the victim was driving a tricycle. A man at the roadside then signaled for him to stop, and when he did, he was shot by the perpetrator. The gunman immediately fled the scene, but authorities already have a person of interest.
