Ambon had only just arrived in Manila, hoping to find work. Instead, he became the victim of a fatal misunderstanding.

His mother, Bonifacia Ambon, recounted that her son had been distressed after realizing his cellphone was stolen.

He reportedly identified the thief as someone named "Junjun" and chased him home.

However, as Christian pursued "Junjun," someone shouted that a thief was on the loose, shifting the blame onto him.

“My son would never do such a thing. Even though we were poor, he wouldn’t steal,” Bonifacia said tearfully.
She further alleged, “Junjun grabbed him and ran upstairs. When Christian followed, a woman started yelling ‘Thief! Thief!’ That’s when Junjun stabbed him.”

Bonifacia also claimed that she overheard the barangay captain instructing people to throw Christian into the river.

The barangay captain, Mark Delfin, denied the allegations and stated, as per GMA's report:

“Papasok na sila ng bahay nila, naglabas ng kutsilyo at akma na aambahan yung kasama niya. Tapos umatras. Hindi na ngayon alam ng kasama niya kung saan siya pumunta nagulat na lang na nagkagulo dito sa may portion ng likod. Pagbagsak dun sir, nagsigaw dun inakyatan niya ng magnanakaw. Akala kasi nila magnanakaw," Delfin said.
