Two days later, the boy’s leg reportedly turned black, prompting them to seek medical attention at a hospital in Talisay City.
There, a doctor advised that the affected part of the leg needed amputation, which was carried out on February 8.
On Monday, Quimada formally filed a complaint with DOH 7 in Cebu City, accusing the Toledo hospital of negligence that led to the worsening of his son's condition and, ultimately, the amputation.
Dr. Annessa Patindol, head of DOH-7’s Regulation, Licensing, and Enforcement Division, assured that a fact-finding investigation would be conducted in Toledo City to determine the actions taken by the hospital staff.
She also advised the family to escalate the matter to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) 7, which has jurisdiction over the doctor involved.
The doctor in question will be asked to clarify whether a nursing attendant, rather than a licensed physician, stitched the child’s wound.
“We will personally conduct a fact-finding investigation, which I will lead,” Patindol said, emphasizing that nurses should only assist doctors and prepare medical equipment.
Meanwhile, Dr. Abjel Khan Espera, chief of Toledo City General Hospital, confirmed that the hospital has launched its own investigation.
The staff members allegedly involved have been suspended while the inquiry is ongoing.
“As of now the personnel involved atong gi-hold sa sila, wa sa nato gipa-duty while ongoing [ang] investigation, and then I think naa gyuy mga pamaagi bitaw nga murag moingon ang mga parents nga wala sila tarunga og hatag og instructions, at the same time, sa atua sad personnel dire sa hospital, kami pud although we follow sa guidelines, amo sad ma-question ngano wa sad namo ma-perform as alleged,” Espera stated.
