A photo of Alice Guo, whose real name is Guo Hua Ping, with Department of the Interior and Local Government Sec. Benhur Abalos and Philippine National Police Chief PGen. Rommel Marbil has been making the rounds on social media.

Guo was seen all smiles while making a peace sign in the now-viral photo.

In a press conference following their arrival from Indonesia early Friday morning, Abalos addressed the controversy surrounding the snap.

He explained he was unaware of what Guo was doing while the photo was taken for documentation.

“Nag-request si Alice na kausapin kami ni chief and sinabi talaga na meron siyang death threats and in-assure ko siya na death threats 'wag niyang alalahanin. Ang importante, sabihin niya ang totoo, lahat,” the Interior secretary aired.

“Pina-document namin, para malinaw ito. Hindi ko naman alam kung anong ginagawa niya. Siyempre, nakatingin ako sa camera,” he added.

In the same conference, Guo confirmed receiving death threats. She also explained that she feels safe with the authorities around her.

Alice Leal Guo is the Mayor of the Municipality of Bamban, Tarlac. She won as mayor during the national elections in 2022. She became known nationwide after her name was dragged into the ongoing Senate investigations regarding Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations or (POGO) and the alleged proliferation of illegal immigrants. Her name has been the subject of many online memes since then.

Guo Hua Ping, also known as Alice Guo, was arrested in Indonesia. Sen. Win Gatchalian, in a social media post, announced that the dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor was arrested in Tangerang City, Jakarta. In a message sent to GMA News, Gatchalian said Guo was nabbed at 1:30 AM on September 4, 2024 and she is currently in the custody of the Indonesian Police. The news was also confirmed by NBI Director Jaime Santiago, according to ABS-CBN News.

Alice Guo’s sister, Shiela Guo, is now at the Senate detention facility. She arrived at the facility on August 26 after the National Bureau of Investigation transferred custody to the Senate Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms, as per the Philippine star. According to PTV, Shiela also underwent inventory and medical test. It can be recalled that Shiela and Cassandra Li Ong were nabbed in Indonesia and brought back to the Philippines last August 22.
