Nesthy Petecio, one of the Pinoy athletes expected to get at least a silver, or at most a gold, medal, fell short of her own expectations.

Apparently, Poland’s Julia Szeremeta managed to outbox Nesthy, causing the latter to lose the fight and settle for a bronze medal.

In a report by the Philippine Star, the Pinay boxer, who is a silver medalist of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, herself admitted she was expecting to get the gold medal this time.

She said she was very confident she could do it but then things didn’t go her way.

“Akala ko akin to this time, sobrang grabe yung tiwala ko sa sarili ko na makukuha ko siya,” Nesthy said.
“But yun nga, medyo hindi tayo [pinalad] ngayong gabi,” the Pinay boxer added.

In a report by Rappler, the final score was 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 28-29 in favor of Poland’s pugilist.

Despite the upset, Nesthy said she’s still thankful because she felt she did all she could to win the gold medal.

“Sobrang thankful pa rin ako kay Lord kasi maganda iyong pinakita ko,” Nesthy said.

Nesthy’s medal brought the Philippine medal tally to two gold medals, courtesy of Carlos Yulo, and two bronze medals, from Nesthy and another Pinay boxer, Aira Villegas.

It was also reported by Inquirer that Nesthy, a non-commissioned Coast Guard personnel, will be promoted to the next higher rank.

Philippine Coast Guard’s Chief, Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, himself made the announcement in an ambush interview.

“The Coast Guard will be promoting her to the next high rank when she comes back,” Admiral Gavan said.

It can be recalled that Pinay boxer Aira Villegas also secured a bronze medal for the Philippines at the Olympics. According to Marcos Jr., it was a knockout performance done by Aira at the Olympics 2024.

Earlier, a Pinoy athlete, Carlos Yulo, secured two gold medals in two separate gymnastics event, making history as the first Filipino to win a medal in such event in the Olympics. He secured his first gold medal in the Men's floor exercise, and his second in the Men's Vault. It is worth noting that Carlos is the first Filipino male athlete in the 2024 Paris Olympics to bag a gold for the country.
