Pablo Torre, a Fil-Am sportswriter, has explained his wearing of a “Sablay” in an event he attended in a caption on his post on Instagram.

The “Sablay” is the official sash of the University of the Philippines worn by both graduating students and its graduates attending formal academic activities and similar functions.

However, the photo and video he posted on socmed shows the event he was attending appeared to be unconnected to an academic function or occasion.

In the same caption on his IG post, he also admitted he never went to UP and the “Sablay” that he was wearing was his father’s, whom he said graduated from the university.

“So, just wanted to answer a couple questions about the sash I'm wearing here, which is called a sablay. And this specific one proudly belongs to graduates of the University of the Philippines. I didn't go to UP,” Torres admitted.

“But both of my parents, and both of their late fathers, did. So shoutout to my dad for letting me borrow his sablay for one night, so I could pay tribute to all of them ” he added.

Torres’ photo was picked up by major media outlets like CNN, which reported photo has gone viral with netizens criticizing him for wearing the “Sablay” outside of an academic function.

“As a UP alumni, it's kind of unsettling…” said one netizen on CNN's post.
“Yun lang, Sablay ka! Nothing against it but the institution has its regulations. The Sablay, should not be worn outside of "academic functions and activities". ” said another.
“You’re like wearing your academic toga to a red-carpet event, which is already ridiculous. What’s worse is, it’s not yours, which makes it even more ridiculous ” a netizen commented.

Posts, such as photos or videos, that arouse the interest of netizens would often go viral on social media. These viral posts appeal to the emotions of netizens, and in rare cases, such could also happen to ordinary people.

One example of a video of a celebrity that has gone viral is that of Maxene Magalona walking around the Greenhills Shopping center with a guy in tow. They were holding hands. Netizens speculated that the guy in the video is the new boyfriend of Maxene. The actress separated years ago from her former husband Rob Mananquil.
