Jose Mari Chan may be one of the most recognizable voices of the Christmas season in the Philippines, but his life does not slow down once the holiday period ends.

The veteran singer recently opened up about his life outside his Christmas music during a guest appearance on Melai Cantiveros’ vodcast “Kuan on One.” While Chan is especially busy from September to December because of his holiday classics, he revealed that he continues to work throughout the rest of the year.

Cantiveros pointed out how Chan’s Christmas songs once again dominate Filipino playlists and television programs when the “Ber” months arrive.

“I’m happy to do it. Masaya ako na kantahin ang Christmas songs ko at maghatid ng saya sa mga tao,” Chan said.

When asked whether he gets to take a break from work from January to August, the 81-year-old singer revealed that he remains occupied with another professional commitment.

“No. I have a daily job. I work for a sugar company. It’s a sugar central in Negros,” he said.

Aside from his work, Chan also continues to prioritize his health. He shared that he has made changes to his diet and maintains a regular exercise routine.

“I take care of my diet. Hindi na ako kumakain ng baboy at baka. I exercise every morning. Forty-five minutes. Walking,” Chan said.

For Chan, taking care of his health is not simply about maintaining his own well-being. He said staying healthy allows him to spend more time with the people who matter to him, particularly his children and grandchildren.

“It’s important for your health. Nobody lives forever. But you try to protect and preserve your health for your children and grandchildren,” he said.

Chan recently marked the start of the “Ber” months with a guest appearance on GMA’s “Unang Hirit” on September 1, where he performed his iconic Christmas song “Christmas in Our Hearts.”

During the appearance, the singer also used his platform to encourage Filipinos who have enough resources to extend assistance to people affected by flooding in different parts of the country.

“God has blessed us with enough property and wealth. We should help those who are in need. There are so many brother and sister Filipinos out there who need help,” he said.

“We should always reach out and help them.”
