Labalan passed away in Australia at the age of 83 after battling an illness.
The specific cause of death was not disclosed. Her passing was confirmed earlier by her son, Carlo Labalan, on February 12, just weeks after she celebrated her 83rd birthday in January.
Throughout her decades-long career, Labalan earned recognition as a versatile character actress.
She appeared in several notable films, including Aliw, Bilangin ang Bituin sa Langit, and Nakausap Ko ang Birhen. Beyond drama, she was also admired for her work in comedy and served as an acting coach to many performers in the industry.
Her contributions to Philippine cinema and television left a lasting mark on colleagues and audiences alike.
A trailblazer in Philippine cinema and voice acting, Vangie Labalan built a reputation not only as a versatile performer but also as a respected acting mentor. She gained lasting recognition for her memorable role opposite Nora Aunor in the critically acclaimed 1982 film Himala. In recent years, she continued to demonstrate her range by portraying Carmen Pangan in the popular television series FPJ's Batang Quiapo, further cementing her legacy in the industry.
The Philippine entertainment community was recently saddened by her passing at the age of 83. Her son, Carlo Labalan, confirmed on February 12, 2026, that she died peacefully in Australia with close family members by her side. Throughout her decades-long career, Labalan became known for the depth and authenticity she brought to her roles, particularly in Himala, a film that remains a landmark in local cinema. Following the announcement of her death, several prominent personalities expressed their condolences, including FDCP Chair Jose Javier Reyes and her longtime colleague Roderick Paulate, both of whom paid tribute to her contributions as an artist and mentor.
Her passing came shortly after the industry also bid farewell to another veteran performer, Raoul Aragon. The actor, regarded as one of the pillars of Philippine cinema’s Golden Age, died on January 22, 2026, in California at 78. Aragon was widely celebrated for his powerful dramatic portrayals, most notably earning Best Actor honors at the 1979 Metro Manila Film Festival for the Ina Ka ng Anak Mo directed by Lino Brocka. His remains are expected to be returned to the Philippines for a memorial service honoring his enduring impact on the film industry.
