Senator Robin Padilla has filed Senate Bill 2777 seeking to reimpose the death penalty for rape cases.

In a report by GMA News, the legislator filed the bill amid the ongoing investigation into alleged abuse and harassment of those who are working in television networks, as well as those under artist management agencies.

It can be recalled that the death penalty was reinstated in the year 1993 or during the time of President Fidel V. Ramos, though it was again abolished in June of 2006 during the time of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

In August of 2018, Philippine News Agency that Malacañang, then under President Rodrigo Duterte, has issued a statement through Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque that the reimposition of death penalty was among the priorities of the then Duterte administration.

Roque said then that they were looking, at the time, to reinstate the death penalty for heinous drug-related crimes.

“It is still the priority of the administration to reimpose the death penalty for serious drug-related offenses but the decision, because it was already passed by Congress, is now up to the Senate,” then Presidential Spokesperson Roque said in a press conference back in 2018.

In an Inquirer report last year, several lawmakers also sought the return of death penalty after two Filipinos were executed in China.

In the recent Bill filed by Sen. Robin, it called for the amendment of the Anti-Rape Law in order for it to be stronger and progressive amid the rapidly changing times.

The bill stated that there is a need for amendment in order for laws to be “stronger, more gender-responsive, and progressive, especially in these changing times.”

Robin Padilla is a famous action star and endorser in the Philippines. He is married to actress-host Mariel Padilla. The actor has two children with Mariel – Isabella and Gabriela. He is also the father of actress Kylie Padilla. Robin ran for senator in the 2022 Election. He won the race and was number one in the number of votes received among all candidates.

About a month ago, Sen. Robin said he’s disappointed with being a politician, adding that he doesn’t enjoy it. He also said that he finds it hard to sleep nowadays, unlike back when he’s only an actor. The legislator said that despite the hard work he’s doing and things he’s done to help the people, it seems he has no peace of mind. The actor-turned-politician then said that it’s really very hard to perform his job particularly since the system is so rotten.

In another previous news, Sen. Robin shared his thoughts on the breakup between his nephew Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo. According to Abante Tonite, Robin believes that once Kathryn and Daniel mature, they will realize that they are meant for each other and that they will reconcile as a couple once they’re given a project together. The politician also reportedly encouraged Kathryn and Daniel to enjoy their lives away from each other because that will supposedly allow them to realize that they love each other. Furthermore, Robin acknowledged Kathryn’s contribution to Daniel’s success in the showbiz industry.
