The video drew criticism online, with some people accusing Emman of being a “nepo baby” because she was the daughter of Kuya Kim and the granddaughter of former Manila Mayor Lito Atienza.

However, Emman later clarified that the bill was actually paid by their friend, who was celebrating her birthday.

Despite the explanation, the backlash had already affected Emman deeply, according to Kuya Kim. He recalled becoming worried when the controversy erupted and seeing his daughter become the target of numerous hurtful comments.

“Alam mo, kinabahan ako nung lumabas ‘yung ‘guest-a-bill challenge’ na ‘yun…
“All the trolls were at her, and lahat ng masasakit na salita. Lahat. So pinag-usapan namin dito. Sinabi niya lahat. And you know, when hurtful words are said against you, sometimes you don’t forget those words.
“I actually know the person who started all that. He’s a professional PR troll, but you know, I forgive him already. I forgive him. He does that for a living, and he victimized my Emman, and that’s okay,” he said.

Kuya Kim’s revelation offered a glimpse into the lasting impact that the incident had on his daughter and their family. Although he identified the person as someone who allegedly worked professionally as a PR troll, he emphasized that he had already chosen to forgive him.

His decision to forgive comes against the backdrop of the much greater loss his family eventually experienced. Emman died in 2025 at only 19 years old, leaving Kuya Kim, his family, and those who knew her grieving her death.

Following Emman’s passing, the family also became more open about the mental health struggles she had experienced. Kuya Kim has repeatedly used his platform to encourage people dealing with emotional difficulties to seek support and remember that they are not alone.

His recollection on Toni Talks therefore touched on more than an old social media controversy. It also reflected a father’s continued effort to process what happened to his daughter and the painful memories surrounding her final years.

Kim Atienza, popularly called “Kuya Kim,” has built a long career in Philippine television as a host, weather presenter, and public personality. He first became widely known through Matanglawin, ABS-CBN’s educational program covering subjects involving science, nature, and animals. His approachable presentation style also made him a familiar face as TV Patrol’s weather presenter. Beyond weather and science-related segments, he has hosted and appeared on numerous programs, demonstrating his range as a television personality. In 2021, he moved to GMA Network, where he continued his work on informative and lifestyle programs, including Dapat Alam Mo!, while also becoming one of the segment hosts of 24 Oras.

Earlier, Kuya Kim challenged an old-fashioned way of looking at emotional and psychological struggles during his appearance on Dani Barretto’s The Bare It All Podcast. He discussed how some people from older generations tend to dismiss or minimize emotional difficulties. To make his point, he referred to Christian pastor Rick Warren during the discussion. Although Kuya Kim recognized the importance of prayer and faith in developing inner strength, he also stressed that mental illness should be understood as a genuine medical condition rather than something that can simply be overcome through faith alone.

Previously, Kuya Kim shared a message of encouragement for people experiencing emotional difficulties, assuring them that they are not alone and should not consider themselves a burden. He dedicated the message to his late daughter, Emman Atienza, while acknowledging that he continues to grieve her loss. At the same time, he said he intended to continue carrying forward what he described as Emman’s fight, using his public platform to promote understanding and support for people dealing with mental health challenges.
