The television host and entrepreneur took to social media to comment on the situation, drawing attention to the difficulties faced by ordinary Filipinos who still have to travel to work, school and other destinations despite dangerous and inconvenient conditions.
For many commuters, heavy rains and flooded roads have meant longer travel times, difficult journeys and disruptions to their daily routines. Students and employees have likewise had to contend with getting to their schools and workplaces as rainfall continues to affect communities.
Gutierrez appeared to use his platform to call attention to the contrast between the struggles of Filipinos dealing with flooding and what he perceived as more superficial concerns among some people.

“While others are so focused on fashion and what’s on sale or not, this is the state of our country,” he wrote.
He then directed his criticism toward public officials and their families.
“We deserve better from our public servants & their families,” Gutierrez added.
The actor and host did not identify the people he was referring to in the post. His remarks nevertheless drew attention because of the timing, as flooding has remained a major concern in several areas while the country continues to deal with questions about the effectiveness and integrity of flood-control infrastructure.
Gutierrez’s comments come against the backdrop of a major government investigation into alleged irregularities involving flood-control projects.
The controversy has centered on accusations that billions of pesos intended to protect communities from flooding were diverted through allegedly anomalous or so-called “ghost” projects. Investigations have involved contractors, Department of Public Works and Highways officials and politicians. The government has pursued criminal cases while agencies have also sought to recover allegedly misappropriated public funds.
