In an interview with MJ Marfori, uploaded on her TikTok, Piolo advised politicians to put the people — especially those living in poverty — first, saying they shouldn’t make the lives of ordinary citizens harder than they already are. “Nakakapikon. You have these flood control projects issue and everyday you see your fellowmen having a hard time trying to get by. Sana magkaroon ng konsensya yung mga tao kasi nakakahiya tayo. Sana makonsensya sila. Wag niyo na nakawan yung mga tao, naghihirap na nga lalo pa mahihirap,” Piolo was reported to have said.
As a taxpayer himself, Piolo admitted he often doesn’t think about where his tax money goes when paying dues, but believes that public officials must be more transparent about it so taxpayers can trust that their contributions are used wisely and justly.
Recent senate and congressional hearings are investigating if the money allocated for flood control projects have been misused. A key allegation from contractors Sarah and Curlee Discaya claims that at least 17 congressmen and multiple Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials demanded substantial kickbacks—some reports suggest as much as 25–30% of project costs.
