Pope Francis visited the Philippines in 2015, marking the first papal visit to the country in the 21st century. His journey included stops in Manila, Tacloban, and Palo, Leyte, where he offered comfort to survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. The visit’s theme, “Mercy and Compassion,” resonated deeply with Filipinos, culminating in a historic Mass at Luneta Park attended by approximately 6 to 7 million people—the largest papal gathering in history.

The pontiff passed away, at the age of 88, following a 38-day hospitalization for double pneumonia. His death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo. Pope Francis’s 12-year papacy was marked by his advocacy for marginalized communities, environmental stewardship, and efforts to reform the Catholic Church. His final public appearance was on Easter Sunday, where he delivered blessings from St. Peter’s Basilica and greeted the faithful from the popemobile.
