A photo of Teodora Alonzo has surfaced on social media.
KAMI learned that Teodora is the mother of the Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal.
She was born on November 9, 1827, and passed away on August 16, 1911.
In a report by the FilipiKnow, the photo was taken at the home of Teodora in Binondo way back 1911 before she passed away.
Teodora was only in her early 20s when she married the 30-year-old Francisco Mercado, a wealthy Chinese merchant. They had 11 children and one of them was Jose Rizal.
She was among the elite women during her time. She was an alumna of Colegio de Santa Rosa in Intramuros.
Teodora was reportedly imprisoned twice. The first one was in the 1870s when the wife of his half-brother Jose Alberto accused Teodora of poisoning her. The second one was in the 1880s when Teodora allegedly used the wrong surname.
In the memoir of Jose Rizal, he paid tribute to his mother when he said: “Ah! Without her what would have been my fate? After God the mother is everything to man.”
