The National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) recently confirmed to the public that the number of islands in the Philippines has already increased.
KAMI learned that the said agency was able to discover more than 500 new islands through the use of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IFSAR).
The said equipment enhanced NAMRIA’s ability to detect land masses and changes in land forms in the entire Philippines.
From the usual 7,107 count, the total number of islands in the country is now 7,641.
The information was first shared to the public through the Facebook post of Philippine Geomatics Symposium (PhilGEOS).
“Did you know that the Philippines having 7,107 islands is an outdated fact?” the social media post said.
“With the advancement in mapping technology, the NAMRIA was able to confirm that there are over 500 new islands in the country,” it added.
In a previous article by KAMI, President Rodrigo Duterte went to China to discuss the arbitral ruling over West Philippine Sea.
The Philippines is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia. Its 7,641 islands are categorized by three main regions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
