Fact check: Is Bong Go the first-ever Chinese-Filipino to become a senator in PH?

- However, this claim has been debunked

President Rodrigo Duterte has delivered a speech during the corporate launch of real estate development firm Golden Topper Group Incorporated Philippines on September 25.

KAMI learned that during his speech, the President claimed that Senator Christopher “Bong” Go was the first Chinese-Filipino to become a senator in the Philippines.

“May I call on the stage, Sen. Bong Go, the first Chinese-Filipino who became a senator,” the President said.

However, Rappler has debunked the President’s claim.

Late Senator Sergio Osmeña came from a Chinese-Filipino family has served in the Senate from 1922-1934.

Both Alfredo Lim and Nikki Coseteng also have Chinese ancestry. Lim served as a senator from 2004-2007, while Coseteng became a senator from 1992-2001.

Former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III also served as a senator from 2007-2010. His mother, Cory Cojuangco Aquino, came from a Chinese family.

Incumbent Senator Sherwin Gatchalian is the son of Chinese businessman William Gatchalian. He started serving at the Senate since 2016.

Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Tesoro Go won during the May 2019 polls. He had served as the personal aide of President Duterte for more than 21 years and counting.

He also became the Special Assistant to the President (SAP) starting from June 2016 to October 2018.
