Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa has flared up after a student leader mentioned the case of convicted murderer former Calauan Mayor Antonio Sanchez and the “Oplan Tokhang” during the Senate hearing for mandatory Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) for Grades 11 and 12.

KAMI learned that National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) President Raoul Manuel mentioned that it would be difficult to uphold the law enforcement and rights awareness if there is a senator who is fine with freeing a convicted murderer and just let the poor people be victims of “tokhang.”

“Lalo na if we have a senator who will say na okay lang na makalaya at may second chance ‘yung isang rapist na mayor, habang ‘yung mga mahihirap, madaling tokhangin na lamang,” Manuel said.

In a report by ABS-CBN News, the statement of the student leader received a furious reaction from Dela Rosa.

“Ang layo naman ng sinasabi mo mister. Kasama ba yan dito sa hearing yong comment ko na yon? Ang layo naman. That’s an affront,” Dela Rosa said.

“Kung may ROTC, dapat ikaw na estudyante ka dapat matuto kang mag respeto kahit sa isang senador man lang na nandito sa hearing na ito. Huwag mong tirahin sa ibang ‘isyu na hindi kasama dito ha,” he added.

Dela Rosa also clarified that he backed the supposed early release of Sanchez because it was stated in the law. However, the senator also mentioned that Sanchez should be sentenced with death if only the capital punishment was reimposed.

“Did you na ako mismo gusto kong bitayin yang Sanchez na iyan ha? I am for death penalty. Kung may death penalty noon dapat nabitay na yang Sanchez na iyan,” he mentioned.

“Gusto ko death penalty, ayaw niyo. Ngayon, i-release ‘yan dahil walang death penalty, titirahin ninyo na naman ako. Ako ba gumawa ng batas na ‘yan?“ Dela Rosa said.

In a previous report by KAMI, Dela Rosa has commented over the supposed early release of convicted murderer former Calauan Mayor Antonio Sanchez.

Dela Rosa said that Sanchez is now a “changed man,” according to some corrections officers. Sanchez was among the candidates who are subjected to an early release due to good conduct.

However, the Department of Justice and Bureau of Corrections recently said that Sanchez is ineligible for an early release.

Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa was the Director General of the Bureau of Corrections. Before winning as a senator in the May 2019 polls, Dela Rosa was the Chief of the Philippine National Police.
