Robin Padilla receives absolute pardon from Duterte

- The actor said he did not expect it as he was only scheduled to meet Duterte

Action star Robin Padilla was caught off guard when President Rodrigo duterte granted him an absolute pardon after their meeting in Malacañang Palace on Tuesday.

The actor was only supposed to meet up with the president, but when he arrived, he was shocked to see the documents for his clemency were already there.

Duterte confirmed the good news in a dinner with reporters in the Palace.

“I just granted pardon in favor of Robin Padilla kasi yung original pardon niya hindi sinabi yung full restoration ng political and civil rights therefore he could not trravel, he could not get a permit… to possess a gun again. I really do not know the dimension of of what is meant by deprivation of political and human rights. But one thing is that you cannot vote, you cannot travel and therefore he could not be issued a passport,” the 71-year-old executive said.

A known supporter of Duterte, Padilla was sent to jail in 1994 for illegal possession of firearms and was sentenced to serve for 21 years in prison. The actor starterd his term in 1995 after the Court of Appeals upheld the ruling.

In 1997, he was released after then President Fidel Ramos granted him conditional pardon. Nevertheless, the pardon deprived him of his civil and political rights.

Thus, Padilla has now finally redeemed what was taken from him with Duterte's absolute pardon.

“Basta yung pardon ko is full restoration of his civil and political rights,” the former Davao City mayor stated.

Padilla was included in the list of names for executive clemency recommended by he Board of Pardons and Parole.
