The Department of Education (DepEd) has expressed its condolences following the death of Ateneo de Davao University student-athlete Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, who passed away during a tragic incident in Aurora province.

Baterbonia was among two Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team student-athletes who reportedly drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8. The other victim was fellow student-athlete Divine Adili.
In a statement released on June 9, DepEd honored Baterbonia’s accomplishments both as a basketball player and as a student-athlete who brought pride to his school and region.
“Nakikiramay ang Department of Education (DepEd) sa pamilya, mga kaibigan, teammates, coaches, at mga mahal sa buhay ni Rene Clert ‘Bobet’ Baterbonia,” the department said.

DepEd also highlighted Baterbonia’s roots as a graduate of Talacogon National High School in Agusan del Sur and his contributions as a representative of Ateneo de Davao University.
“Isang proud na produkto ng Talacogon National High School sa Agusan del Sur at kinatawan ng Ateneo de Davao University, si Bobet ay nagbigay ng karangalan sa Davao Region dahil sa kanyang husay, dedikasyon, at sportsmanship,” the statement read.
The agency likewise recalled his impressive achievements on the basketball court. Among his most notable accomplishments was being named the Most Valuable Player of the 2025 Palarong Pambansa Secondary Boys Basketball Finals.
“Siya ang kinilalang Most Valuable Player ng 2025 Palarong Pambansa Secondary Boys Basketball Finals at naging mahalagang bahagi ng kanyang koponan na nagtapos bilang runner-up sa 2026 Palarong Pambansa,” DepEd added.
Beyond his athletic success, the department emphasized the qualities that made Baterbonia admired by teammates, friends, and fellow athletes.
“Higit pa sa kanyang mga tagumpay sa hardcourt, maaalala si Bobet bilang isang mapagkumbaba at masipag na atleta,” the statement said.
DepEd concluded its message by expressing confidence that Baterbonia’s memory would remain alive in the hearts of those who knew him.
“Mananatiling buhay sa puso ng kanyang pamilya, mga kaibigan, teammates, at kapwa student-athletes ang alaala ni Bobet,” it stated.
The Philippine Sports Commission had also earlier conveyed its condolences over the deaths of Baterbonia and Adili. The commission additionally assured the public that it would participate in the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
