A 78-year-old Filipino-American grandma, Nora Sangalang, is making waves on social media, particularly TikTok, for her extremely humorous pickup lines.
She has gained over 700k followers on TikTok, with her videos on the video sharing platform garnering a total of more than 20.3 million likes.
Mama Nora is now living with her family in Long Island, New York, where her grandson, Jeffrey Juarez, helps in managing her social media accounts, which all have the handle “Our Filipino Grandma.”
In an interview over CNN’s New Day, Mama Nora could only say “I’m surprised” when asked how did she gain such many followers, likes, and views.
“I didn’t expect this to happen. The followers, they continue to watch us, all the videos,” Mama Nora began.
Mama Nora’s grandson Jeffrey, who was with her during the interview, said that they created “Our Filipino Grandma” on TikTok only last December and even he was surprised at how rapidly it became popular.
Jeffrey said that he created his own TikTok account at the start of the pandemic, though he noticed that videos with his Mama Nora present received more likes and views compared to those where she’s not around.
That’s when he decided to create an exclusive account for Mama Nora and the videos it contained went viral one after the other.
According to Jeffrey, many followers were even asking if Mama Nora could be their grandma because they so love her.
Heart Evangelista, gumising na lang daw siya isang umaga na masayang-masaya: “No meds, just one major prayer”
“They said ‘could she be our grandma too, we love her so much, she reminds me of my lola,’ and I said yes of course! Like this is the perfect opportunity to really share my grandma’s love to everyone from all over the world!” Jeffrey said.

Stories about grandmothers often touch the hearts of Pinoys, so it is no surprise that many people would follow the account of Mama Nora on TikTok. Perhaps what made her so endearing to many is her humorous manner, which could have the effect of relieving them from stress brought about by problems at work and at home. While many Pinoy ex-pats left their elderlies in the Philippines in search for greener pastures abroad, their hearts and minds were always with their grandmas and grandpas. So when they saw the account of Mama Nora and watched her videos, it could have reminded them of their elderlies back home, prompting them to follow her account.

Stories about grandmothers often go viral. One such example is the story of an 80-year-old grandmother who captured the attention of netizens after her photo was shared by someone concerned over her welfare. At such an old age, she still kept on working as she needed to keep on earning for her husband and for her daughter. The husband, although not specifically stated, may have not been able to get up anymore as it showed how he was lying on his bed. The old lady's daughter may also have some form of illness as she is kept behind a locked area with bars.
In another viral story, it tells of a grandmother who would quietly beg on the streets of Caloocan City in order to support her granddaughter. Her granddaughter is already orphaned and the poor grandma does not have any other option but to beg on the streets so that her apo could attend her classes. Lola said that although she sometimes feels ashamed, she just thinks of her granddaughter who is struggling with her broken cellphone for her online class. Lola is the only one who could support her apo since her husband, the grandpa, is also sick, and she would have to be on the streets for both of them.
