He publicized his apology via his Instagram page following backlash initially stemming from the release of the New York Times documentary "Framing Britney Spears." It highlighted the fallout from Britney's breakup with Justin.

According to NBC News, Justin and Britney dated from 1999 to 2002. After their breakup, Justin launched his solo career on an album that cast Britney as a cheater and Justin as a doting romantic. After which, Britney became a figure of fun, while the male singer’s career continued to soar.

Netizens then tweeted about #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay in recognition of the 2004 "wardrobe malfunction" in which Janet's breast was mistakenly exposed by Justin, according to Reuters.

Her music was then pulled from all Viacom channels and radio stations. She was also banned from the Grammy Awards the following week, where she was set to perform, while Justin’s act was not removed.
