A photo showing the Philippine flag being used as a table skirt during the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) has been making the rounds on social media.

However, KAMI learned that the claim was misleading.

In a report by Abante, broadcast journalist Ricky Velasco shared the photos on his Twitter account.

Through a tweet, he reportedly claimed that the Philippine flag even touched the floor while being used as a table cloth which is against the law.

“But what there’s more….. this to all the blunders in the SEAGames 2019. Meals are served to participating athletes. But using our FLAG as a table cover mantle? Notice that, the flag even touches the floor. (Photo courtesy to Albert Papina),” it said.

However, a netizen shared a photo on Twitter claiming that Albert Papina, the one Velasco credited for the photos, has dismissed the claim.

According to Papina, the photos he shared was not related to the SEA Games 2019. He mentioned that the photos were dated November 23, 2015.

“Two days ago, I opened the memory app of my FB account. I scrolled down then I came across with those pictures posted by a friend based in the US. It is dated November 23, 2015. So how can that be related to SEAG?” he said.

“Then netizens immediately jumped on it, used it and started spreading malicious speculations and connecting it with SEAG to further embarrass the administration. Wow!!!” he added.

Here is the post where Papina shared the photos last November 25:

As reported by ABS-CBN News, an official said that the photos circulating on social media were “malicious” and “fake news.”

“‪Upon investigating the alleged PH flag used as mantle for the catering, the said FB (Facebook) posting was found to be malicious and fake news,” Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) executive-director Guillermo Iroy said.

“We appreciate constructive criticism, but we deplore the fake news that came out just to create public outrage. SEA Games should unite us rather than divide us,” he added.

In a previous report by KAMI, Pinoy celebrities aired their disappointment over the early mishaps that happened days before the SEA Games 2019.

Southeast Asian Games is a biennial regional multi-sport event which will be hosted by the Philippines this year from November 30 to December 11.
