US President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with a chronic vein condition, the White House confirmed Thursday, following days of public speculation triggered by visible bruising on his hand in recent photographs.

According to BBC, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed Trump was found to have “chronic venous insufficiency.”

Leavitt said the bruising on Trump’s hand was “tissue damage from frequent handshaking” and the use of aspirin, which she said is “part of a standard cardio-vascular prevention regimen.”

As per The New York Times, Dr. Sean P. Barbabella, the US president’s physician, said in a memo that Trump experienced mild swelling in his lower legs and underwent a comprehensive evaluation, which revealed the condition.

Barbabella added that the condition was “benign and common” in people over 70. It is worth noting that Trump is currently 79.

Despite the diagnosis, Barbabella assured the public that Trump remains in “excellent” overall health.

The update comes after social media users raised concerns over Trump’s physical condition due to the noticeable marks on his hand, prompting renewed attention to the president’s health.

Donald Trump is the 45th and 47th President of the United States. He won in 2016 as the 45th US President against former Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the wife of former US President Bill Clinton, though lost in his re-election bid against former US President Joe Biden in 2020. In 2024, Trump made a political comeback and won against former US Vice President Kamala Harris and triumpanthly took his oath again, this time as the 47th US President of the United States.

The former US president’s diagnosis was announced in a statement from his office released on May 18. The office noted that the cancer had spread to the 82-year-old politician’s bones. Biden and his family are said to be reviewing treatment options. In a Truth Social post, Trump said he and his wife are saddened by the news. Trump also wished his predecessor a fast and successful recovery.

Earlier, Donald Trump made history as the second US leader to make a great political comeback at the White House. He won in 2016, lost in 2020, and was declared the winning candidate in the 2024 presidential election. President Trump won several battleground states, assuring of more than 270 electoral votes, which is needed to win the US presidency. In his victory speech at Trump’s campaign headquarters in Florida, he declared that America has given them “an unprecedented and powerful mandate.”
