If the landmine kills someone, the person who placed it can be charged with murder. In war zones, this could be considered a war crime. Authorities can take the case to national courts, or even to international courts like the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Punishments are very strict. The person found guilty could get a long prison sentence, heavy fines, or even life in prison. In extreme cases, especially during war, they could face trial for crimes against humanity.
