A 50-year-old man from Winnipeg has been charged with assault with a weapon, weapon possession, and disturbing a public gathering after an unsettling incident on the evening of February 9 at Holy Ghost Parish in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) reported that Pawel Olownia attempted to stab the parish's 38-year-old priest with a knife near the altar during Mass.

Fortunately, the priest was able to avoid the attack after noticing the threat.

"As the suspect approached the pastor, luckily he was able to see this, whether he saw he had a knife or his sixth sense kicked in, and he was able to avoid getting assaulted by the suspect," said Constable Stephen Spencer, a public information officer with the WPS.

After the near-attack, the suspect reportedly drove the knife into the altar and then calmly sat at the back of the church.

The situation was swiftly contained by an off-duty member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), who, along with other parishioners, detained Olownia until law enforcement arrived to arrest him.

There is no known connection between Olownia and the priest, nor has any clear motive been identified for the act.

The priest confirmed that he had never seen the man before the incident.

"I’ve been on 23 years, and this is the first I’ve seen of this type of incident in a church, so it’s quite different, for sure, and quite alarming," Spencer added.

The Archdiocese of Winnipeg issued a statement on February 10, confirming their awareness of the attempted stabbing and the suspect's arrest. The statement expressed relief that no one was injured and stated that they were awaiting the outcome of legal proceedings.

Olownia remains in custody as the investigation continues and court proceedings are set to unfold.

Authorities are looking at land dispute as the motive for the crime. The Occidental Mindoro Provincial Police Office have formed a special task force to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Still in other news, a father and his nine-year-old child, along with his nine-year-old relative died. They were riding a tricycle and on their way to school when they collided with a truck. Based on the investigation, as reported by GMA Regional TV One Mindanao, the tricycle tried to overtake a motorcycle. That was when it collided with a forward truck that was carrying motorcycles.
