The incident, which occurred on Sunday, July 20, 2025, in Incheon, has also uncovered a disturbing cache of homemade explosives, raising alarms in a nation with exceptionally strict gun control laws.

The 62-year-old suspect, whose name has been withheld, is accused of fatally shooting his son, who was in his 30s, with a homemade firearm during a party held for the father at his own residence.

The celebration was attended by the victim's wife, their two young children, and other family acquaintances, making the attack all the more horrific for the witnesses present.

During questioning by police profilers, the suspect reportedly stated he felt profound "betrayal" after his family allegedly cut off his monthly financial support.

He claimed to have previously received approximately 3 million won (around $2,179 USD) as a supposed salary from a family business—a skincare franchise reportedly founded by his ex-wife—but these payments ceased "at some point last year."

With reportedly three to four years of unemployment, he stated he had since been relying on a lump-sum withdrawal from his national pension to cover his living expenses, despite residing in a sprawling 230-square-meter penthouse in Incheon owned by his former spouse.

Expressing deep resentment, the suspect allegedly told investigators that his son had "turned his back" on him, contrasting his current circumstances with a past he described as living "a good person who lived a decent life." This perceived abandonment is being explored as a key factor in his alleged motive.

However, the victim's family strongly disputes the suspect's narrative of a longstanding family conflict as a mitigating factor.

In statements to the media on Tuesday, they asserted that there was "no mitigating motive" for the father's actions, claiming that he had also deliberately targeted his daughter-in-law, his two grandchildren, and other guests present at the scene.

Further compounding the gravity of the incident, police conducting a search of the suspect's residence in Dobong-gu, northern Seoul, the day after the shooting, discovered a chilling plot.

Authorities found 15 containers filled with highly flammable liquids, such as thinner and household chemicals, along with ignition devices.

These makeshift incendiary devices were reportedly rigged with a timer set to trigger a fire at noon on Monday, July 21.

The suspect purportedly admitted to setting up the explosives because he "wasn't planning on going back," claiming he timed them to minimize harm to other residents.

The discovery of homemade firearms and explosives has particularly shocked South Korea, a country where private gun ownership is rigorously restricted and gun-related violence is exceedingly rare.

Investigators have found that the suspect allegedly learned to assemble the crude pipe-guns, capable of firing 12-gauge shotgun shells, by watching online tutorial videos.

Police reportedly recovered a total of 13 homemade firearms and 86 shells—some loaded—from his rental car and the crime scene, suggesting a disturbing level of premeditation.

The Incheon Metropolitan Police Department continues its intensive investigation into the case. While the suspect's statements about his perceived betrayal have been included in profiling reports, authorities emphasize that no definitive conclusion has yet been reached regarding his full motives.
