In a video published by GMA News on social media, one of the prisoners suddenly attacked the officers using a long machete. The attack wounded three officers.

The incident occurred during visiting hours, when two prisoners initially pretended to ask permission to go to the registration room. When the officer opened the door, the prisoners then attacked the prison guards using machetes, which opened the way for the other prisoners to escape.

"We do not yet know for sure where the machetes came from. It is suspected that they were hidden under clothes during visiting hours," said Edi Saputra, Head of Nabire Class II B Penitentiary (Detention Center or Prison).

As seen in the now-viral video, the officers were unable to ward off the attack.

"Most likely this was planned. They took advantage of the gap when two prisoners asked for permission to go to the registration room. When the door was opened, a group of prisoners immediately attacked from behind," Saputra explained.

The jailbreakers include members of an armed criminal group and a rebel group. A task force has been formed to search for the escapees.
