American actor Nicholas Brendon, best known for portraying Xander Harris on all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has passed away at the age of 54.

His family announced the heartbreaking news on his official Instagram account on March 21 (Philippine time), posting photos featuring the late actor and some of his artwork.

In their statement, they began by sharing the heartbreaking news of his passing:

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes.”

They also highlighted how Nicholas was remembered beyond his acting career:

“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans.”

The family reflected on his personality and the meaning of his art:

“He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”

Finally, they requested privacy as they mourned and thanked everyone for their support:

Nicholas Brendon became widely known for playing Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired from 1997 to 2003 alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, and David Boreanaz. Outside the series, he appeared in films like Psycho Beach Party, Unholy, and Coherence, and had TV roles in Kitchen Confidential and Criminal Minds.
