The manager of Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz has issued a statement addressing the recent discussion surrounding the fuel incentive previously granted to the athlete after her historic victory at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

In a Facebook post, Manuel Noel Ferrer responded to the statement released by Phoenix Petroleum regarding the fuel benefit that had been extended to Diaz following her Olympic triumph.

"We have taken note of the statement released by Phoenix Petroleum regarding the fuel donation extended to Hidilyn after her historic gold medal win at the Tokyo Olympics," Ferrer said.

He explained that when the incentive was first introduced to the public, it was presented as a gesture recognizing Diaz’s achievement.

"At the time the fuel benefit from Phoenix Petroleum was announced, it was presented publicly as a 'FREE FUEL FOR LIFE' reward," Ferrer said.

According to him, Diaz and her team understood the reward as a sign of appreciation for her contribution to the country.

"Importantly, no conditions or restrictions were communicated to us at the time the reward was given," Ferrer said.

Ferrer added that requirements connected to brand alignment were only mentioned later on.

"It was only around two years later that conditions relating to brand alignment were raised," Ferrer said.

The manager also clarified that his earlier remarks about the situation were based on the facts surrounding the issue.

"Any public reaction that followed is not something Hidilyn or her team sought," Ferrer said.

Despite the issue, Diaz’s camp said they remain grateful for the support extended to the Olympic champion over the years. Ferrer also acknowledged the company’s decision regarding the incentive.

"Phoenix Petroleum decided not to continue the fuel benefit and we respect their decision," Ferrer said.
