Ernest John "EJ" Obiena is a Filipino pole vaulter who has gained international recognition for his achievements in athletics. Born on November 17, 1995, Obiena has made significant strides in the sport, becoming one of Asia's leading pole vaulters.
It can be recalled that EJ ended up in fourth place in the men's pole vault final in the 2024 Paris Olympics. After falling short of an Olympic medal, the Filipino athlete took to social media and wrote an emotional post. The pole vaulter described what he currently feels about being a fourth placer. On the other hand, EJ thanked the Filipinos for the support and penned an optimistic note as he tackled Carlos Yulo's double-gold win.
After that event, he was not able to hold back the tears when he was interviewed after failing to grab a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. The Olympian was not able to hide his pain and while he was happy for his co-athletes, he said that it did not diminish his pain. Amid tears, he apologized to the Filipino people for the result of the pole event. He also said that while he promised to do better in 2024 after Tokyo Olympics in 2020, he still came short.
