Head coach Chot Reyes of Gilas Pilipinas defended his team against the brawl that happened between Australia during the Fiba World Cup. Team Philippines and Australia ended their game in the Philippine Arena chaotically by throwing punches. The head coach of Gilas revealed that they are just protecting themselves.
According to ABS-CBN Sports, head coach Chot Reyes disclosed that they truly tried to restrain their players to avoid any fight even before the game started. The head coach added that during their pre-game, the forward of Australia Daniel Kickert has been showing motives which they just brushed off.
During the third quarter’s four-minute mark, everything went physical. RR Pogoy pushed Chris Goulding of Australia to the floor that provoked teammate Daniel Kickert to punch Pogoy which also knocked the latter on the floor.
Andray Blatche and Jayson Castro also went after Kickert, and the Gilas bench followed later. Because of the brawl between the two teams, nine players of Gilas were ejected which led them to lose by default.
Chot Reyes revealed that they are ready for the sanctions that FIBA will give but still insisted that Kickert played a big role in everything that had happened. He knew that his team will never back down.
Chot Reyes is a Filipino coach and is currently the head coach of the Gilas Pilipinas, the Philippines' national basketball team. Reyes is a five-time PBA Coach of the Year.
