Nonito Donaire, one of the most acclaimed Filipino boxers, was the subject of a recent sad news regarding his current health condition.
KAMI learned that the said athlete has tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease.
As reported by Rappler, the 4-division world champion was scheduled to have a boxing match against a Puerto Rican opponent named Emmanuel Rodriguez on December 19.
However, due to the current status of Nonito’s health, he was forced to withdraw his participation from the much-awaited bout.
Inquirer.net also shared that it is already the second time that the said boxer was featured in a canceled fight due to COVID-19.
His original opponent named Nordine Oubaali earlier withdrew from their scheduled match because he tested positive for the virus.
Meanwhile, ABS-CBN News reported that the match on December 19 may still push through with another Filipino boxer taking the slot of Nonito. Reymart Gaballo was the name mentioned in the report.
Nonito Donaire is a 38-year-old boxer dubbed as “The Filipino Flash” because of his speed inside the ring. He is a two-time winner of The Ring’s “Knockout of the Year” award.
A year ago, he lost to Naoya Inoue via unanimous decision. However, he earned the respect of the Japanese people because of his effort.
