It can be recalled that the two, in order to settle a land dispute, underwent what locals call the “sulif” ritual.
The ritual involved submerging underwater where the one that comes up first is defeated by the one who comes up last, thereby the dispute is settled in favor of the one who came out of the water last.
Both Gaspar and Tonny, after being underwater for around 8 minutes, perished.
Rather than dwelling on the heartbreaking outcome of their traditional mediation process, the families openly acknowledged that Gaspar and Tonny engaged in the customary practice out of their own free will and profound respect for their ancestral traditions.
Because of this shared understanding, the families explicitly stated that local barangay officials, tribal representatives, and the community at large should absolutely not carry any burden of blame for how things unfolded.

The narrative of this community has now beautifully shifted from a bitter land dispute into a powerful story of profound reconciliation and familial love.
With the careful guidance, mediation, and support of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), both sides have successfully reached a highly amicable and harmonious settlement.
Rather than letting the 15-hectare ancestral property continue to cause division and heartache, they have gracefully agreed to split the agricultural land evenly, guaranteeing a fair and peaceful fifty percent share to each side of the family.
Gaspar's daughter, Michelle, softly reflected on the immense importance of moving forward and protecting the community's future, hoping that their shared experience serves as a gentle, guiding lesson for others who might face similar disputes.
“Sana ay hindi na po maulit ang Sulif, kasi kapag namatay ang isang tao, hindi na maibabalik ang buhay niya,” she shared, softly advocating for safer, modern avenues of conflict resolution moving forward.
By bravely choosing family unity over endless litigation and anger, these relatives have demonstrated an extraordinary level of emotional maturity and grace.
