According to a report by Jun Veneracion on “24 Oras,” Police Staff Sergeant Renato Casauay of the Philippine National Police-Drug Enforcement Group met his asset, Julian Salamat, inside a compound in Barangay Mojon on January 24. The meeting, which took place on Casauay’s birthday, would later turn deadly.

CCTV footage showed Casauay walking out of the camera’s view, followed by Salamat. Moments later, at least five gunshots were heard.
The actual shooting was not captured, but investigators said the audio provided critical clues to the crime.

Despite the gunfire, several men seen nearby appeared unfazed and did not report the incident to authorities.
The footage later showed Salamat issuing instructions to his companions. Police said the suspects worked together to dispose of Casauay’s body by placing it inside a septic tank.
Authorities believe there was a conspiracy to conceal the crime, noting that no report was made following the killing.
Casauay’s remains were only discovered on January 30, nearly a week after the incident.
Four suspects have since been arrested, including Police Corporal Vivencio Abalos. Investigators said the suspects, including the alleged shooter, are part of a group of motorcycle riders to which Abalos also belongs.
Abalos was arrested for concealment after the gunman reportedly informed him of the killing.
Police are still hunting the suspected shooter and six other individuals believed to be involved. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced a ₱1 million reward for information that could lead to their arrest.
Investigators said Casauay may have been targeted because of his work, as one of Salamat’s companions had been arrested by the officer last December in a drug-related operation. GMA Integrated News has reached out to the suspects for comment, while Casauay’s family has declined to issue a statement.
In other news, a nighttime stroll turned fatal for a group of Filipina healthcare workers after a speeding vehicle plowed into them in Tabuk’s Muruj Al Amir District, claiming the life of one nurse. Saudi authorities later arrested a 34-year-old local resident accused of escaping the scene following the crash near a shopping mall. Philippine agencies, including the Migrant Workers Office and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, are now supporting the bereaved family, facilitating the repatriation of the victim’s remains and addressing legal concerns tied to her inactive membership. Another victim remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery in Riyadh, as Philippine officials pledged to closely follow the case to ensure accountability under Saudi law.
Meanwhile, an unexpected moment stole attention during an international boxing match at Madison Square Garden on January 31. Heavyweight fighter Jarrell Miller became an instant viral sensation after an uppercut from Kingsley Ibeh caused his hairpiece to lift during an intense exchange. Ringside commentators likened the scene to a cartoon, drawing laughter from spectators. Miller later explained that the wig was a rushed solution after a hair mishap involving ammonium bleach at his mother’s home days before the bout. Unfazed by the distraction, “Big Baby” Miller went on to earn a split-decision victory and capped off the night by jokingly rubbing his exposed scalp for the cameras.
